David Hancock, PhD

David is the owner of A Focused Mind Sports Consulting. He is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (https://appliedsportpsych.org/) and a professional member of the Canadian Sport Psychology Association (https://www.cspa-acps.com/). His areas of expertise include goal setting, building confidence, maintaining focus, managing competitive anxiety, and achieving peak performance. He has a passion for sports at all levels, and has been a hockey referee for over 25 years.

David is a Full Professor (starting September, 2025) in the School of Human Kinetics at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, Canada. He teaches Sport Psychology, Coaching, Growth & Development, and Sociology of Sport. His main research priorities include sport officials and youth sport.

David was born and raised in Ontario, attending Laurentian University (B.A. Hons, Sport Psychology; M.A., Human Development) and University of Ottawa (PhD, Human Kinetics). He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Queen’s University, before taking a position as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University. David now lives in Torbay, NL with his wife, son, and dog.
